Energy Saving Tips to Keep You Cool During the Heat of the Summer

Although we’e had a several-day span of very mild temperatures here in Southern Maryland, warmer weather is on the horizon for next week, and likely for the rest of the summer. To help keep you cool (and to save some pressure on your wallet), we’ve come up with a few tips to help keep your home cool without having to break the bank on your electric bill.

Switch Ceiling Fans to Rotate in a Counter-Clockwise Position
Having your ceiling fans circulating counter-clockwise will help to push cooler air down, creating a refreshing breeze. 

Close Blinds and Curtains During Peak Sunshine Hours
While the sun is beaming down on your home, close the blinds and curtains to the windows where the sun glares inside. Closing the curtains and blinds will prohibit a greenhouse-effect and will help keep your home’s internal temperature down. If possible, invest in thermal curtains to hel

Keep Ceiling Fans Powered On
Ceiling fans in general do not require a ton of energy usage. Keeping them powered on at all times will help keep air circulating in your home, taking pressure off of your HVAC system. 

Keep Lights Powered Off When Possible
Keeping interior lighting powered off when possible will help keep the heat from the bulbs to a minimum and will help keep your space cooler. 

Perform Routine Maintenance on Your HVAC System
Be sure to change your HVAC filters regularly, and contact an HVAC company to come out to perform routine maintenance on your home’s AC unit. Preventative care will save you in the long-run.
