Custom Home vs. Existing Floor Plan: Which is Right for Your Family?

So, you’ve decided it’s time to sell your home and build your forever home. But, now it’s time to decide on whether you’d prefer to build a custom home or a home with an existing floor plan. While there are many benefits to both, the choice will be most dependent on your family’s needs. We’ve compiled a list of a few things to consider, before you make your decision.

Is Your Family on a Timeline?
While time from beginning to end of building a home can vary depending on materials, permits, and many other factors, building a custom home may have a longer timeline than building one with an existing floor plan.

Do You Already Have a Neighborhood in Mind?
Many planned communities already have builders contracted to build homes in their communities. Some may offer custom built homes, and some may only offer the option to select an existing floor plan. Knowing the requirements of the community you’re seeking to build in will be an important factor in choosing which route to go.

What if Your Needs Change?
Building a custom home is a great way to personalize your space specific to the needs of your family. But, 10 years from now, what if those needs change? As life goes on, children grow up and move out, parents retire, and suddenly those playrooms and home offices are no longer necessary. Choosing a home, whether custom built or with an existing floor plan, that you can change the use of the space in as time goes on might be something to consider.
