In the world of kitchen countertops, granite has been king for a long time. Although there are many options for homeowners and designers to choose from, many people go this route because of its durability, versatility, and beauty. For people seeking an even more modern aesthetic or choices that are more unique, here are some other countertops that are putting a twist in the modern kitchen.

Engineered Quartz

Boasting the same low-maintenance durability that granite is known for, engineered quartz is incredibly resistant to heat, scratching, and staining. Because it’s engineered, quartz comes in many colors and styles.

Wood

Having a wood countertop may seem like a very high maintenance choice, but designers and homeowners love this option because of its beautiful, natural look. The best way to combat the damage that wood can be susceptible to from your cooking and chopping is through a monthly sealing. It adds warmth and balance to a modern kitchen and can always be refinished.

Natural Stone

Natural stones, like soapstone or slate, offer similar durability to granite. They have a range of beautiful colors, including gray, green, and even black. Although soapstone countertops are soft and do eventually start to show the effects of cutting and scratches, slate requires almost no maintenance.

Plastic Laminate

The option with the most designs, patterns, and colors available is plastic laminate. You can expect to get many years of use out of this option before having to do repairs. For longer countertops, there will be seams that you’ll have to contend with, but the vast number of options may make it worth it.

Concrete

Concrete countertops are probably the best option for long applications as they run up to 10 feet long. While they are susceptible to cracking, they are incredibly heat resistant and durable. They are also known for their smooth qualities and can be sealed to enhance their low-maintenance characteristics.

Stainless Steel

Since many of the appliances found in modern kitchens are stainless steel, you can extend that look on your countertops with a stainless steel option. You’ll often find this option in commercial kitchens because they are easy to clean and resistant to staining and rust. This look is probably the most modern on the list and will turn your kitchen into the functional, stylish place of your dreams.
