Preparing Your Yard and Garden for Spring

It’s officially March and the weather is starting to get warmer, pollen is already starting to spread through the air, and soon enough we’ll see signs of growth indicating a highly anticipated spring! If you’re thinking of taking some time in the next couple of weeks to prepare your yard and garden for spring, check out these helpful tips to get you started.

Remove Leaves, Branches and Other Debris from Garden Beds
It might be slightly too early to start planting, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take some time to prepare your grounds! Start by removing dead leaves, branches, old plants that won’t grow back from your beds. Start trimming hedges and bushes to give them more shape in preparation for growing season. By removing this debris, your beds will be ready to plant as soon as the weather is warm!

Loosen Up Soil and Fertilize Beds to Prepare for Planting
Taking a rake, shovel or hoe to your beds to loosen up any hard clumps of dirt from the winter and adding some natural fertilizers to give your soil a boost for the spring is always a good idea! Additionally, clear pathways and rock gardens from weeds and ensure they are structurally sound.

Research Plants that Best Suit Your Garden
Have an issue with mosquitos? Research plants that are helpful to repel pests (hint: marigold flowers are great to repel mosquitos)! Looking for the best combinations of vegetables and herbs to plant? There are plenty of articles that suggest certain herbs that deter pests from waxy vegetables (hint: planting basil next to tomato and pepper plants).

Take Inventory of Tools and Quality of Planters
After the cold weather and rainy season we’ve had, take inventory of your garden tools to ensure your tools are all in working order. Make sure your hose, sprinkler system, and watering cans are functioning properly. Check the structural integrity of your planters, especially if they are made from wood. Make sure all of your solar lights and garden lights are functioning properly. Purchase any supplies needed now and be ready for planting season!
