Tips on Preparing Homework Stations Ahead of the Upcoming School Year

We’re almost halfway through August, and, many children will be heading back to school within the next couple of weeks! A great way to help your child stay organized throughout the school year with their homework and outside projects is to create a dedicated homework station in your home. If you’re considering creating a station, here are a few tips to get you started!

Select a Quiet Area in Your Home with Minimal Distractions
When the family is home, distractions are inevitable. Select a corner of a room that is quiet, away from main living spaces where your child may get distracted. Additionally, removing distracting items like toys, electronic devices to help keep your child focused on their school work.

Ensure Your Homework Space is Well-Stocked with Supplies
Ensuring your child has enough paper, pencils, pens, a calculator, ruler, or any other supply that might be needed to complete their assignments will ensure your child has less of a reason to leave the space to seek the supplies needed. Having a well-stocked space means there will be less of a chance they will become distracted by trying to obtain the supplies. If they have to leave their space, they may find something to distract them from the assignment they are working on.

Dedicate a Specific Time for Your Child to Complete Assignments
Dedicating a time for your children to complete their assignments, whether an hour or 45 minutes each day, at the same time every day, will help your child learn a routine. Setting a standard block of time each day where they know they are going to be in their workspace will help prevent them from hurrying through their assignments. If their work is completed sooner, encourage them to read a book or work ahead for the week. As time goes on and your child gets into a routine that this specific time is designated to homework or school activities will help keep them focused.
