Holiday Light and Decoration Safety

It’s officially December and holiday lights and decorations are going up across our neighborhoods! Whether you’ve been putting up decorations around your home and yard for many years, or this is your first time, it’s important to ensure safety measures are taken to prevent any potential incidents.

Ladder Safety
If you’re planning on climbing a ladder to hang Christmas lights on the roof or gutters of your home, be sure to have someone to assist with holding your ladder steady. Be sure to inspect your ladder to ensure it is in proper working condition and is safe to climb. As you move your ladder during installation, ensure the ladder is on a level surface.

Electric Wire Safety
Inspect all lights and cords before installing and running electricity to them to ensure all wires are intact and are not chewed or worn.

Place Cords Strategically to Avoid Tripping Hazards
If you are using inflatable decorations, or even connecting outside lights with extension cords, it is important to ensure your cords are in plain sight or are removed from walking paths, especially to keep delivery drivers who are unfamiliar with your home safe from tripping hazards.

Do Not Overload Electrical Outlets
Be cautious in how many decorations you are plugging into your outdoor outlets and read manufacturer warnings on electric cords and lights so that you do not overload an outlet. Too many items drawing electric from one place could create a fire hazard.

Unplug All Lights and Decorations Overnight or When You Leave
Be sure to unplug your lights and decorations before you head to bed at night, or before you leave your home. An adult should always be present when lights or decorations are in use, and all decorations should be unplugged before going to bed.
