Preparing Your Home for Thanksgiving Travel

Headed out of town to visit family for Thanksgiving? You along with an estimated 4.7 million folks will be hitting the road this holiday weekend! While visiting family is always fun, it is important to make sure your home is secured and even looking as though it isn’t vacant, before you venture out.

Be sure to lock all windows and doors.
Check all windows in doors in your home, even the doors that aren’t regularly used, to ensure everything is locked up tight. Double check first-floor windows to ensure they cannot be opened from the outside.

Position doorbell cameras correctly.
Take a few moments to verify that your doorbell cameras are in position correctly and that you can see anyone that may approach your door.

Inform a trusted neighbor of your travel plans.
Contact a trusted neighbor to let them know that you’ll be heading out for the holiday weekend, and ask that they keep an eye on your property, possibly to even collect your mail while you are gone and make sure they have a phone number where you can be reached in the event of an emergency.

Leave lights on inside your home.
A few lights on inside your home will make it seem like someone is home, rather than just a dark house.

Toss food that is expected to expire before you leave, and take out garbage.
There is nothing worse than coming home from out of town and finding someone forgot to take the garbage out. Be sure to dispose of all foods that may expire before you return and take all inside garbage out before you head out of town.

Bring in or secure any loose objects outside.
In the event of a windy day, you don’t want to come home to find your outdoor furniture or decorations scattered across your yard. Secure or bring inside any decorations that may blow away in high winds.
